Breaking Bad Wiki

  • Seems like a big discussion that's been happening around the wiki recently is "exactly when does the show take place?" and I thought it would be nice to have a Timeline article that includes all the information we know. What do you think?

The answer to the question is "it doesn't matter" but -- we're wiki people and it will be a fun project. :)

    • Yeah, I noticed that. The only thing I could guess is that maybe, despite the show starting in 2008, the story really began in 2010. This would explain how Jesse has a game that was released in 2011, as well as the reference to bin Laden's death in the finale.

Do you think there has been any evidence in previous episodes that would contradict this?

    • There's Walt's birthday on the divorce papers -- but those are just props and could've been a minor error overlooked.

I'll make a draft of the article and you can see if you like it or not for this wiki. I'm sure other people not yet on the wiki are wondering the same thing, and we can always use more linkbait. :)

    • Right on. If we can't decide on anything, we can just change the subheading to "The Future" or "The Next Year."

    • I don't think the story began in 2010, cause the episode "Live Free or Die" shows before the opening (teaser part of the episode) a scene of a long-haired walt 52 years old (2010) getting an assault-rifle from a dealer of him

Not sure what you are trying to say or suggest... but the Bin Laden thing really bothered me. The writers on BB are very smart and I have to believe either this was a HUGE brain fart or a well placed clue. The show starts with Walt's 50th Birthday. Bin Laden died May 1st 2011. Creative license can always be used when making TV shows and they can be set at any time. It's up to the shows writers. In "Live Free or Die" we see Walt is 52. The Bacon Birthday thing has been a running thing and I don't believe it's just a random thing. Movie or TV show, when you see something like the BACON thing it's there for a reason. It's letting us know how long things have been going on. So if true, I believe the show started some time in 2011 before The Death of Bin Laden. Here is an interesting Timeline for the show. http://blog.thegreenfieldgroup.org/a-year-in-the-life-of-walter-white-a-breaking-bad-timeline/

This might be the stupidest thing i've ever read

    • Gilligan has already admitted that the Bin Laden line was s brain fart. You can look it up, I'm sure...

    • The timeline is easy to set by specific facts they purposely used in the show, essentially Jane's life and death.

Jane is born April 4, 1982.

She dies ~3 months after the show starts (in-show time already verified) at age 26.

      1982 + 26 = 2008

Therefore, the events in the show began sometime during the school year, likely in March 2008 due to the fact that Walt's class is preparing for mid-terms. Jane would have been 25 at the show's start and 26 by the time she meets Jesse and later dies.

    • But aren't we asuming she is 26 BECAUSE we're assuming the events started in 2008?

    • Lucas, no.   Re-read my post.

In the episode when Jane's body is being gathered by the medical examiners.  Her father is asked for her age and birthdate.

      Age 26 and Apr 4, 1982.

If the writers wanted the timeline to be ambiguous they would never have given both of those details, right?

      -Phoenix.

      101
      00:14:01,600 --> 00:14:02,874
      Phoenix, Arizona?

They never say her age, maybe you're talking about another scene, i don't know, but here it's what i said, we assume she's 26 because we think it started in 2008

    • Look up Walt's conversation with Jane's dad at the bar.  I know they specifically state her age in one of the scenes.

    • I found it.

      Season 2, "Phoenix".

      Bar scene -

Mr. Margolis:  So what'd you have?  Girl or boy?

      Walt:  Oh, uh, little girl.

      Mr. Margolis:  That's nice, congratulations.

      Walt:  Thank you.

Mr. Margolis:  I have a daughter

      Walt:  Yeah?  How old?

Mr. Margolis:  Old enough to know better, ... uh.. 27 next month.

So, at the time of her death Jane would have been 26 and it should have been March 2009.

    • In Season 1 Episode 1, Walt has a handicapped parking thing in his car while driving home from the car wash. It is dated 12/27/08. Either it is expired (unlikely), or the show starts in 2008.

So the Bin Laden thing is probably a continuity error.

    • The discussion around Walt's date of death would also indicate that he died on his 52nd birthday in 2010, not 2011.
