I think some things that were forgotten as the series ended were things that I didn't want to be true. Even though Walt decended into being a very evil person, from never wanting anyone hurt to pulling the trigger himself on many people, I still was a fan of his. I wanted him to survive. I wanted him and Jesse to be partners again. For both of them to succeed, in their illegal ventures.
The thing that is forgotten is, Walt hated Jesse toward the end. He wanted Jesse dead. He wanted Jesse hurt (by telling him about Jane). He was furious when he realized Jesse was still alive, making the blue meth. That was not part of the deal with Jack, he was supposed to have killed Jesse.
Jesse, hated Walt. He hated that he always got away with everything. He was so disturbed by it all, he litterally threw his millions out the window and instead of wealth, wanted to see Walt brought down.
So at the end, they had no love for each other anymore, in any way. Walt spared Jesse, when he realized Jesse was an unwilling prisioner. He gave Jesse the opportunity to pull the trigger on himself, but Jesse was done letting Walt tell him what to do.
In their final scene together, I wanted them to somehow reconnect, and realize that they succeeded in killing Jack's gang together. But I forgot about the characters true feelings. It was my feelings about the characters, that wanted them to be friends again at the end. But their feelings were, selfish. Jesse realized Walt was dying, as they showed him looking at the blood on Walt's shirt. Walt ruined his family's life, his own life, and Jesse's life, along with two women that Jesse loved. Jesse had no words at that point, because of all that. I felt Jesse's final look at Walt was kind of like "yeah, you came back and saved me, but "F" you anyway. You're dead, and I'm free."
Even in that final scene together, Walt was still only there for himself, not to save Jesse. He only wanted to kill Jack and his gang, and Lydia. That's it.
I like the ending with Jesse leaving as he did. Nightime, he's going out, opposite direction of the police coming in. The viewer decides where Jesse goes from there. Be careful what you wish for? Jesse wanted meth from the beginning, now he has been a prisoner of meth for a year, it has led to the deaths of two women he loved. I think he's done with meth, he somehow reconnects with the child left behind, and he finds a new life as a creator of things as a craftsman in woodworking.
What do you think happened to Jesse after he drove off?
I honestly found the ending less than satisfactory as well. I knew Walter had to die (and finishing the show a year after its real-time conclusion makes it hard to protect yourself from all spoilers) but I would have hoped that he could have somehow died with some modicum of respect from his wife and son. I understand why they hated him (esp Flynn) but don't necessarily think that's the way it had to be from the writing/directing perspective. I've pretty much hated Jesse since the end of S3, and the second half of S5 only exacerbated that. I would really like an intelligent, informed, critically thinking fan of his to explain to me what about him was so damned "redeeming" or even likeable. For anyone up to the challenge, please spare me the writers' quotes about how he was the show's "moral compass" or how he was "vulnerable, naive, and easily manipulated". The first claim (moral) is bullshit, and the others don't really make for a great character as far as a lot of us are concerned. On the night I watched the finale (this weekend) I was hoping that Walt would have taken him out for being a snivelling coward and an informant. But in hindsight, if Walt was bent on whatever redemption he could salvage, that wasn't the way to go.
To your final question about Jesse's ultimate fate. Let's see. He was an emotionally wrecked, indecisive, incompent, drug-addicted loser who came from privilege and flushed it down the toilet to be a "wannbe" gangster. When he got around to being a real gangster, he completely melted down. After a few months as a slave to a bunch of twisted Neo-Nazi psychos who murdered the last woman he loved and made an orphan of a kid he was attached to, I'd imagine that his mental state hasn't really improved. I don't think we can infer that his future is too bright. Likely scenario, he's arrested in connection with Hank and Gomey's death, not to mention all the other bad/dumb shit they can pin on him. Hell, they fingered Walt and Mike, how long can Jesse the dumbass hold out. Worst case scenario, he OD'd on something within a week of escaping the Nazi camp.
Good riddance either way. I had no great love for Skylar and Marie's characters, but can still see how they were victims of circumstance and honestly wish them the best. Jesse, not so much. Guy was the weakest, most histrionic, unreliable major character in any show I've admired in a long long time.
