Hugo Archuleta was a former custodian and janitor at J. P. Wynne High School, which is where Walter White taught. A friendly sort of person, he cleaned up after Walter and offered him some chewing gum when he found Walt in the school bathroom, vomiting from the side-effects of his chemotherapy.
Because of the access his custodial duties afforded him, Hugo was one of the initial suspects in the theft of the chemicals and glassware that Walter stole from the school's chemistry stockroom to equip he and Jesse Pinkman's first lab. Hank Schrader came to the school to follow up after a respirator with the school's name was found at one of Walt and Jesse's desert cook sites. Hank checked the lab's inventory, and found that a large amount of equipment was missing
During the subsequent investigation, Hugo's home and vehicle were searched for evidence linking him to the theft. None was found, but the search turned up a small amount of marijuana in his vehicle, which resulted in him losing his job with the school district. "He's a major league pothead," Hank later tells Walt. "But he didn't raid your chemistry set" ("Crazy Handful of Nothin'").
